Yellow Dock grew in abundance on our farm in Poland. As a child running in the fields I was oblivious to its nutritive and medicinal value. Now, I have a special affinity for wild plants as they don’t need human care to grow. They are true warriors that have the ability of adapting to, and thriving in, even the most uncongenial conditions.
Yellow Dock’s long, narrow, curly mineral-rich, nutritive leaves can be used in salads, soups, and other dishes. One can cook them or consume them raw (avoiding the diminution of its nutritional value). The true medicinal power of this plant, however, lies in its roots.
The roots of Yellow Dock are not only abundant in organic (bio-available) iron, but their chemical compounds also help to enhance the function of the body’s iron absorption mechanism. Botanical iron found in plants is seen by the body as a nutrient—something useful and highly beneficial—in contrary to the inorganic iron (e.g., “ferrous iron” [ferrous sulfate, ferrous fumarate, ferrous gluconate] and “ferric iron”) found in most iron supplements, which our body perceives as a poison. Because of Yellow Dock’s bio-available iron content, the plant has been widely used for combatting anemia and increasing vitality in those who suffer from fatigue or lack of energy.
This herb has an affinity for the liver, which makes it an remedy for ridding the blood of injurious toxins and other deleterious substances. Because many (and frankly, based on my experience, I will say ‘most’) skin conditions actually sprout from the impurities found in the bloodstream, Yellow Dock root has a long history of use for overcoming a myriad of skin disorders (for this purpose, in addition to internal use, it can also be used topically, in the form of poultice made from the entire plant). Furthermore, Yellow Dock has also been traditionally used for an array or digestive issues, including indigestion, and both constipation and diarrhea.
I have used this plant with great success for almost a decade, both by itself, as well as in an adjunct with other botanicals in many of my herbal formulas, depending on the specific goal I want to attain, and the function I want the herb to perform inside the body. Generally, skillfully combining herbs together has the power to significantly augment the effectiveness of the remedy.
