Hypothyroidism, also known as an underactive thyroid (the prefix "hypo" comes from the Greek word meaning "under"), is the most common thyroid disorder. It arises when the thyroid gland fails to produce an adequate amount of thyroid hormones. Conversely, hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland is overactive and manifests in excessive production of thyroid hormones.
