The condition of kidney stones is medically known as “nephrolithiasis” (it’s a combination of the Greek words “nephro” (meaning “kidney”), “litho” (meaning “stone”), and “iasis” (meaning “state”/”condition”).
Kidney stones are basically hard masses of crystallized acids or waste deposits built up inside the kidney. They take anywhere from weeks to years to form and have various shapes and sizes (which range from minuscule like a grain of salt to large stones the size of a golf ball).
